It appears I'm going through a dejavu spell right about now. Just like last year, I can't run the Brooklyn Half due to an injury GGGRRRRR!!!!
It all started a couple of weeks ago when out of the blue, I started feeling some pain on the top of my right foot. I hadn't tripped, fallen, or banged my foot on anything, which would've been the likely explanation with my clumsy self. A piano didn't fall on it either. There was no obvious culprit to the pain. It wasn't my ankle or heels or toes, just a weird swollen bumpy spot on the top/side of my foot. But, I wrapped myself up, which helped a bit and continued to run.
Luckily, I was able to get the MRI results right away and saw my orthopedic doctor the next day. And I could've waited a little longer to hear the news I got. So, the good news is that my bones are looking pretty darn snazzy and there is no stress fracture anywhere, WOOHOO!! But then she said 'however' and 'however' is not something I wanted to hear either. So this is what's up with my foot, I have tibialis anterior tendinosis with a moderate grade partial tear and tendonsynovitis. Try saying all that in one breath. And way to go me for not having just one issue, but really going for the triple whammy, HOLLA! So, even though there is no stress fracture, running is off the menu for at least 4 weeks and physical therapy is on the list for 8 weeks. Aside from the 2-3 times per week physical therapy sessions and anti-inflammatory meds/gels, I get a new accessory. A new bulky, non-sparkly accessory. Really not sure what I was thinking showing up to my orthopedic doctor in non-supportive pointy-toe Kate Spade shoes. I got the evil eye from the Dr about the pointy-toe shoes. Hey! At least they're flats! But this new brace did not fit in my shoe, so I couldn't show it off on my way home...oh, darn.

And yes, I am quite aware that I was in desperate need of a pedi. And that I have funky toes.
That probably wasn't the best move on my part though since the pain just got worse as I ran or walked. I'm sure the walking 3 hours a day in non-supportive fashion flats whilst on the hunt for Faberge eggs didn't help either. And it only felt better on the days I was a complete couch potato which sent the alarms ringing. Ding ding ding! Maybe I should see a doctor. And so I did. Very reluctantly. Mainly because I just knew that something was not right and didn't want to hear the words: STRESS FRACTURE, TORN LIGAMENT, NO RUNNING! Those were my top 2 self-diagnoses. By the way, I am a licensed professional with a degree in Hyperchondrial Freaking Out from the University of Don't Read WebMD.
I went to the very nice people at Empire State Orthopaedics and had an exam and x-ray. Had I known my foot would be photographed and blown up on a TV screen, I would've gotten a pedi. Embarassing! Oh well, there's always next visit. But look, I'm famous! I'm on TV!
You thought my toes looked funky before? HA! Look at those boney beauties...

I came prepared this time and had a pedi! Maybe it'll distract from the brace.
As much as this diagnosis puts a damper on my running and training schedule, I really am relieved and thankful that it was not a stress fracture. Also, as much as the brace is a bit of an eye-sore, I know it's part of getting back on the road so I'm starting to appreciate lacing up these laces instead of my sneakers.
I'm so incredibly bummed I'm going to have to miss the Brooklyn Half again this year. However ('however' is good in this context, I promise!), I'm SOOO excited because my favorite peeps are running this half. The BFF and 2 other great friends are running, so I will definitely be at the Coney Island finish line with pom-poms and a sign and a bullhorn to cheer them all on! Well, maybe not the bullhorn. But definitely a Nathan's hot dog and beer in hand! And maybe a bullhorn...
